Joining the Google Partners program can have many benefits if you want to run ads for clients. The process can be a bit challenging and I hope that this blog post will help you going through it much easily. If you plan to become a Google Partner for your company and are already running ads for clients, doing it as soon as possible is a good idea.
How to join the Google Partners program to run ads for clients?
Google Partners is Google’s program for establishing certified AdWords professionals that can help clients who need help with Google AdWords.
If you want to become a Google certified AdWords professional, then you need to sign up for the Google Partners program.
The Google Partners program contains then all of the tests to get certified with AdWords in it, along with the ability to get your Google Partner badge, which will help you get found by clients.
You can use this badge to show across websites like Upwork, on your own website, or even teaching a course to show that you are a Google AdWords certified professional and a Google partner.
Google Partners is great branding in the sense that it is exactly what you are. You are a partner with Google and you help Google get the needs met of the advertisers using Google AdWords. You help serve the advertisers using Google AdWords.
The benefits of the program are trust and education. When you have got your Google Partner badge, then you have got something recognizable for trust when people are looking for help with Google AdWords.
Now, not everyone realizes this obviously, I didn’t know anything about this program when I needed help with my Google AdWords when I first started my business.
What you can get out of it is that you can stand out, especially in freelancing websites, and you can get listed in the Google Partner Search, which is Google’s search engine for partners. That means Google tries to funnel people looking for help with AdWords to use their partner search to find a certified partner to work with.
Now you sign up for the Google Partners program and then you do the work to get certified, and then you get a certificate from Google showing that you have passed the exams. Now, I haven’t done this yet and I wasn’t planning to do it because I didn’t need to for teaching my AdWords course online.
However now, I’m kind of interested in it, since I do so much work with Google AdWords, to try and see how I do on the test with my existing knowledge of Google AdWords. You need a 80% to pass the test and I can probably teach more about taking the test successfully if I have taken it myself.
So just teaching my AdWords course has got me interested in doing the Google Partners program. It is a completely free program that has nothing but benefits in exchange for time. If you are in a place where you don’t have a lot of clients online, have some free time, and you would like to demonstrate your skills online, Google Partners and going through the Google certification process can be a great way to get your skills validated. You would be able to see if you like helping people with AdWords and try it out without having to spend any money. It seems like worth doing.
You also get special access as a Google partner to advanced research product updates, and the Google Partners community, which is on Google+.
You can also sign up for an AdWords Manager account so that you can get your own promotional offers, those credits that got me to originally sign up for AdWords. You can get those same credits for yourself to hand out to potential clients and those are really powerful for getting new clients.
In the next section I will show you the requirements for joining and becoming a Google partner and Google certified professional.
If you want to sign up for the Google Partners program it can be a little tricky to get the distinction between what an individual is, and then a partner or company profile.
It is pretty easy to sign up, just search for Google Partners in Google and click on “Google Partners.” It will bring everything up automatically to sign in with your existing interface, your email and your Google account.
Now, if you have a Google AdWords Manager account, which I don’t, then you should sign up with that email address.
Click on “Sign up” to continue. This is how easy it is to start the sign up process. Then, there is a lot more to do after that.
You can connect your company, add your mailing address, your phone number, and then you have “Insights.”
If you don’t have a company, then you can create your company in the first section.
You have the ability to go through to do you profile, and you can go into your certifications using the left menu. You can go to AdWords and then you can start taking the test.
You can see that the sign up process is really painless to get started as an individual. Now, if you have your own company, it would be nice to get affiliated with your own company so you can get listed, but if you just want to sign up as individual it is that easy.
All you need to do now is take some of the exams and get certified. You click on the exam you want to take and then you have preparations for the exam and study guides.
When you are ready, you can click “Take exam” and you can take the exam every week. It is that easy to start off as an individual.
You can see that this is just my personal profile, an individual level I have signed up with.
Now, if you want to get an actual Google Partner status through your company there is more work to that so I will explain in the next section.
If you want your company to be a Google partner, there is a lot more work than just signing up with an individual account. Most notably, you need an AdWords manager account that allows you to manage different AdWords account all in one interface.
I believe that to be a partner you need something along the lines of $10,000 in collective eligible spend over 90 days for 3 months. So if you want your company to be a Google partner, you better get to work on getting that AdWords manager account.
You can go to Google’s page for instructions on how to create your AdWords manager account.
Click on “How to create a manager account” and when you are on the page, click on the first link to go to the sign up page.
Now, I don’t see the need for me to make my company join the Google partner program because I’m not looking for new Google AdWords clients, but if you want to get clients online, this seems like it would be good to get started with.
If at any time within the next 3 months I want to do it, then I will make a Google manager account for AdWords because you need that spend history in order to become a Google partner successfully, and get the Google partner badge and then be able to show up in the search.
So if I even thought I might want to do this in a few months, I would need to sign up and then get my accounts linked together. If you try to add your company in without using the email of a Google AdWords manager account like I’m attempting below it doesn’t work.
You will get this error: “AdWords manager account required.”
You need to have this set up beforehand or you can’t go in and add your company, and if you really want to do the most, you would want to have your company.
However, getting started, it is probably better to just go as an individual and work on passing those certification tests first, unless you have a lot of active ad spend on your client accounts already.
If you want to qualify for Google Partner status, there is a lot of work to do with mainly having all the client accounts set up in the AdWords manager account.
If you want to actually have a Google Partner badge on your website to serve clients, if you want to have your company be officially affiliated with Google, if you want to show up in GooglePartners Search and have Google give you clients, here is what you need to do.
You need to fill out your profile in the Google Partners program obviously and you need to get anyone who is in your company certified to do AdWords, and this can be just you and your own company.
Then the main thing is “Meet the spend requirement,” which is I think the most difficult part of this system because the test to get certified in AdWords are free and you can get certified as an individual.
The benefits all come with being a Google partner. You don’t get anything being a Google certified professional other than a certificate you can show, which is the same thing you get after completing my AdWords course.
Being in that Google Partners Search is where the action is. That’s where you can get trust for your company and get Google to give you a new client.
So the spend requirement is the most important and difficult part to achieve in this whole system. If you look at the spend requirement: “At least $10,000 in total AdWords spend over the last 90 calendar days.”
Now that means across all of your account.
If I even wanted to consider getting my company out there in the next three months, I would need to go do the AdWords manager account today, so that the account would be at least 90 days old and the spend requirement could go forward.
Your spend requirement starts whenever you have linked your account too. So if you already are managing accounts for several clients, you would need to grab that AdWords manager account and get all those client accounts linked as soon as possible, so you can get credit for all ad spend.
The way Google explains this is that you don’t get credit for any of the previous spend. This has to be tracked within the last 90 days in your client account. Anything you have spent before this as far as complying with the Google Partner status is irrelevant.
After looking through the Google Partners program, the spend requirement is the most difficult part, and yet there can be some really good benefits to be in the Google Partners program too. You get to go to the events, you get to show up in search results, the badge gives you credibility and there are a lot of great things you can get out of it.
If you have already got the clients and the ad spend in your Google manager account, then you can be in the position to qualify for the Google AdWords Partners program pretty quickly.
After telling you about how to become a Google partner, I have gotten interested and thinking maybe I’d like my company to be a Google partner.
The main thing after what I have just showed you in the previous section is that the main barrier to entry for me is I don’t have the AdWords manager account.
So fortunately there’s a simple solution for that and it is to create one now. I click on the “Sign up for free” button.
I can’t use my existing email address in order to create an AdWords manager account, so what I need to do is make a new AdWords email address to make a manager account, which can then manage all of my AdWords accounts.
I can name my account according to what my clients will see, and then all I need to do is to primarily manage my accounts.
I then go down to select my timezone, country and currency, and then I save and continue.
The “Rules of Use” are pretty straightforward, you basically just consent to keep going using Google AdWords how it is.
All I need to do now is make a new email to use with this AdWords manager account, which has to be a new Gmail account as I will show you in the next section, and then name my account.
I’m going to do it now so that then I am able to get started with being a partner if I want to do that in 90 days.
I’m very excited because I just created a new AdWords manager account. This was very challenging and it took me 30 minutes to an hour to get this done.
I was able to do it by using a new Gmail address. So what you need to do is create a new Gmail address first. I had a problem creating the AdWords manager because I used my business email @JerryBanfield.com Google apps email. These come with automatic AdWords accounts, so you can’t make an AdWords manager account if you set it up that way.
The easiest thing to do is to make a new Gmail account first. Make your new Gmail account, and then when you sign up for the AdWords account manager type of account, then you use that Gmail address in, and then it will sign straight into an account that looks like this.
You can see that it is not just a regular account, it has an admin section and it is set up to manage multiple accounts.
Then what you need to do is sign up for the Google Partners program using this actual account. This is the only one that can be used for a Google Partners account because it has the AdWords manager account with it.
This is a bit complicated and it took me a while and some frustrations to learn myself. So I hope that explaining this to you makes it easier. If you want to apply to the Google Partners program, you have to use a brand new Gmail address that you have made a brand new AdWords account manager account with.
If you have set up this previously you want to sign up for Google Partners with this account, an account that looks like this, where you can manage all of your AdWords accounts together.
I can now put all of my client accounts in one account, this will make things a lot easier for me and I hope that doing the same will make things easier for you too.
How do I use my new Google AdWords account manager account to link my existing AdWords accounts?
The first thing I want to do is link an existing account.
Under the default interface you start over at Accounts in the upper left, then you go down to “+Account” and click “Link existing accounts”
I grab my customer ID from my other Google AdWords account, which is on the upper right of the account and put it in the window. Then I click “Continue.”
I have to enter a name for the account “JerryBanfield.com AdWords” and then I click “Request approval.”
Now that I have requested approval, the next step is to go to the Google AdWords account I want to link and approve this.
I go to Account Settings, then Account Access.
What I see now in this account is that I have a request made by my new AdWords manager account to manage this one in the “Client manager” column.
So I hit “Accept request” and there is an important note popping up that warns me that if I allow access, I will be able to actively change or do anything in the other AdWords account with this account.
I click “OK” and the approval process is completed.
I go back over into my AdWords account manager, and I can see that my “JerryBanfield.com AdWords” account is linked there.
When you set up a new account, it doesn’t have any of the data from before. It only starts getting new data after it has been linked.
I have set this up so in 90 days I will have the spend showing up on this account that then would allow me to apply to be a Google partner. There is no way I can become a partner before that, until this master account has at least $10,000 spent through it.
This is sweet because then you can set up and manage all of the AdWords account you work for under one account instead of having to go into each one individually and create separate windows for them.
This is a lot easier than how I have been doing it before. I’m glad I have learned about this and I’m glad you have taken the time to read this blog post.
