Avoiding something actually leads to spending more time and energy engaging it. That’s why I try and tackle everything head on and deal with it immediately as soon as I can see it. For better or for worse, I don’t try and avoid things. I have so many things to do that the only way I can get anything done is to immediately go into as many things as possible.
Avoiding anything involves more time and energy than doing it to start with. For example, if you have a paper due for school, often you’ll spend more time avoiding it than you’ll spend doing it. I would get papers to write for school and I would spend so many little thoughts from day to day about that paper. I would spend so much energy worrying about that paper. I would spend time worrying about getting that paper done. It would continue to build and build until finally I had no choice but to do the paper or not get it done. If you live like that, your life is consumed by worry and anxiety and fear. You’ll spend 2 – 3 times as much energy building it into this big awful thing to do. When you finally do it, it’s over. You spent most of the time and energy thinking and worrying about it and not actually doing it.
This morning, I noticed the floor was dirty. I have these videos to make, I have work right now. I was thinking about vacuuming while I was doing the videos. If you can do things immediately, you’ll be amazed how much more you can do. I understand life is full of practical concerns. For example, it will be a lot easier for me to vacuum this afternoon. There will be a lot more noise going on, it’s easy for me to do these videos in the morning. If I put vacuuming off another few days, I will keep thinking about it and I’ll keep noticing that I need to vacuum. I’ll spend energy here and there on vacuuming when vacuuming only takes 20 – 40 minutes.
What I did do now in my life is as soon as I think of something that needs to be done I try and do it if possible. I know there’s practical concerns like I’m making this video here. Sometimes you need to do something at home, but you can’t go do that right then. When you get home that night you can tackle it right away, first thing. Then you don’t have anything to think about anymore. When you keep doing this all the time, what you get is a clear mind and clear conscience. You will be able to fall asleep easier because you’re not worrying about anything. Even if you don’t finish whatever big task you have to do, finishing a little bit will leave you feeling better. That’s what I do today.
I have all these Udemy courses up, I have over 1.2 million likes on Facebook. I have millions of views on YouTube with over 10,000 subscribers that want more videos out of me all the time. I thank you for that. The only way I can deliver on that is if I try and do a little bit every day. If I try and do them at once and then schedule them out, it seems like too much. If you told me I need to make 1,000 video lectures for Udemy within the next year I would’ve said that’s way too much. But if you told me to create 5 Udemy lectures a day I would’ve agreed. That’s what I’ve been doing and it has turned into 1300 lectures on Udemy within the last nine months.
Doing a little bit every day and not avoiding things will allow you to be more productive in your daily life. You will be amazed at how much more you get done when you try not to avoid anything and you face it immediately.
Even browsing online works like this. When I’m checking my email now, I work to be disciplined. I don’t open another tab and start checking Facebook. I don’t tab into the next email and see what someone else has to say. Either respond to the email or delete it or decide not to respond to it at all. This is common with marketing messages and such. When you have a message from a real person, you usually respond to it. I used to spend all day checking my email. Now when I do, I go through my email and check it all.
Most of the time I will go through all my email from start to finish because I know that avoiding a certain email will linger. I’ll leave an email or two I need to respond to and then I’ll think about it. I’ll be composing that email in my head. Your brain will give you exactly what you need it to.
That’s a problem if you avoid things. If you’re thinking about doing a paper or doing something you have to do, your brain will keep delivering helpful tips. Your brain will keep thinking about that problem long after you’ve stopped avoiding it. Now I keep my mind clean. I give my brain something to do and I finish it. Just that little task, I’ve given my brain a task to do and I sit here and finish this video. I finish this video because if I were to stop half way through I’d still be thinking about it later. I’d still be going on in my head about this video.
When you do that, your mind is going all the time with these different problems and life seems overwhelming. You can get away with that if you’re not doing a lot. If you’re just going to school and living at home and you don’t have anything to do, you can get away with doing that. If you have a job that’s easy and you live on your own, you can get away with doing that. When you have a full plate, you cannot avoid things because it costs too much time and energy.
Either you see that or you do everything poorly, you do everything without your full attention, or you’re insane. I’ve been insane lots of my life. You have all these problems and life is a mess when it’s just avoiding things.
Today, I pray that I don’t avoid things. I pray that I face things as soon as they come up, even a little feeling like a driver pulls out in front of me and I get angry. I pray that I face that immediately so I don’ t drag that anger out for the rest of the day. Once I see that anger, I feel it, I face it and it goes away. The same thing with anything else. You see it, you face it, you do what you need to do and it goes away. That leaves you feeling clean and pure. From a pure state you can do so much more. I pray that you have access to this pure state today. I pray that you can look at what you need to see in your life right this moment and you can interact with what you have in front of you. You can do the work in front of you each moment. That will allow you to do so much more with a pure clean mind. Thank you for watching this, I hope you have a great day today.
