How I Film Shorts, Reels, and TikToks While I'm Live on Twitch

Doing the Creator Work While I'm Live

I'm going to walk you through exactly how I film videos live on Twitch and then turn them into shorts and upload them, all while I'm still live. In my experience, shorts are one of the best ways to get discovered online and to reach new people, and Twitch is the best way I've found to build a community online. If you're making videos anyway, you might as well get a studio set up like I've got, where you can live stream and really connect with your top fans. I'm actually streaming this live on Twitch right now. I made the background for this and it's amazing. The whole idea is that I do the work as a creator while I'm live instead of offline. So here's exactly how you do it.

I made the background for this in Canva, which you can use for free, or you can upgrade and get some of the tools that are paid. I'm filming this live, so I'll drag it in and show you what that looks like. I film on OBS, and I've set up a shorts tab there where I film the video sideways and capture this main monitor behind me. I capture that monitor, and then using the shorts layout I separate my camera and put a background in behind it. At the top I've got my camera, then the display capture of the monitor, then an abstract background. Everything's on a green screen, and I record that as my short.

Setting Up the Green Screen Text in Canva

To set that up, I've got a presentation in Canva with a green background. I recorded a video with a green background and text that works really well. You can't see that it's green because I've got the chroma key on, but if I turn the chroma key off you can see the actual color. I've figured out exactly where to position the text so that when I switch into the filming format, the text lands right up at the top, and all I do is click through the slides. The text pops up perfectly while I'm filming. Then I hit the filters, turn the chroma key on, and it looks perfect. When I turn it off you can see what I'm actually doing underneath, and then I just go back to my center position for teaching.

If you want to go deeper on this kind of workflow and the thinking behind building an audience with video, I've put a lot of it together in my YouTube Coaching playlist, which pairs well with everything I'm showing here.

Editing and Exporting in Adobe Premiere Pro

Once I've filmed that way, I go into Adobe Premiere Pro. In Premiere, I drag one of my old reels into a new project first, just to make sure the project is set up in the vertical format. Then I drag my video in with the same layout I recorded. All you have to do up in the effect controls window is go into rotation. You click on rotation and put it to 90 degrees if you filmed it the way I did. If you did it the opposite way, you'd rotate it 270 degrees. So if your face was on the left instead of the right, you'd rotate 270. Then I just cut the video up at the top and export it.

Uploading Everywhere Without Leaving the Stream

Right while I'm on stream, I bring up a chatting background like this, and in the background I upload the video to Instagram, TikTok, YouTube Shorts, Twitter, and Facebook. Within about 30 minutes I'm able to create a short directly on stream and then upload it to all these different channels. That's really nice, because I'm able to answer questions anybody has while I'm filming. I'd essentially just be doing this same thing offline anyway, but I've built a workflow that lets me do it while I'm live, so I can just show up, do all my work here at once, and be done. The thing I don't want is to finish my stream and then have a bunch of videos left over to upload. This is an amazing workflow that I've honestly never seen anybody else do, and I thought it would be fun to share with you.
