My Very First God of War
This is the very first God of War I've ever played. I have no idea at all about God of War, and I'm playing it anyway. This is the 17th new game I've played in 2021, and we're going for 200 new games played in 2021. My mission is to show you the very most fun games you can play, and the graphics are looking beautiful on this one right from the start.
Be yourself. Be whatever you're feeling today. An author wrote a book called The Top Five Regrets of the Dying, and one of the top five regrets of people dying was that they didn't live their life how they really wanted to. They thought too much about what other people wanted them to do, often in major decisions — things like they wanted to get a divorce, but they didn't because they didn't want to disappoint. And then they went to their grave, dying, saying, "Man, I wish I'd lived my life how I really wanted to. And I'm dying now, and it's too late for me." You remember this, and you tell somebody about that.
My Man Can Throw an Axe
What about the axe, though? Woo! My man can throw an axe! My man can throw an axe real good. Wait, he just — ooh, that's cool. He can just call the axe back? That's nice. So I'm here to tell you today: live your life how you really want to.
Press L2 to aim — oh, so I can throw the axe. Oh yeah, we're gonna need that back. Ooh, you can do this like a boomerang? That's nice. Whoop — don't take my son's head off. That wouldn't be cool. I'd have to tell myself in a deep voice to do better. Don't be sorry for taking your son's head off — do better. Although I don't know if you can do better once you've taken your son's head off. You might not have a chance to do better. It could be difficult at the minimum.
The First Ogre of Many
Beautiful. Oh, whoa. That thing is big. What am I gonna do against that? Oh my god, that thing's big. That's what she said. Can I get him in the face? Get that — give me that axe back. Ah, missed the axe. Here, hit him. He's going after my son hard right now. Come on. Hit him in the butt. There we go. Yeah, this is not gonna feel good right in the pecker. Sorry about that. That's kind of rude, isn't it? I know I'm trying to kill him, but it's still rude. Hit him right in the genitals. Oh, he just got smacked. He just clocked my son. That's rude. What's he doing? He's killing him. This thing is strong. I got hit — I think it hurt me. Oh, in and out quick. Shoot some arrows, son.
This is kind of cool. I have not done hardly any melee combat games like this before. Oh, son. You gotta move, son. Don't just let him wail on you like that. See that big boy coming? You need to get out of the way. My son's a fighter — I'm gonna go to bat for this kid. My son is hopping on him. Legit. All right, I'm about to do a flawless on this guy. Here, finish him — I'll let my son finish him. And you gotta hit some of those arrows, son, you weren't even hitting anything. Oh, he dead.
All right, so R3 — what are we gonna do, rip his head off like Duke Nukem? Aim for the goal spot? I didn't even see a goal spot. Go for the head? All right, I'll try it. My son's going off — that's good, let him take his anger out. Let him get that out. Look at me, boy — or watch it, because I don't want to get stabbed. This is pretty cool, to have an adventure with your son. That's the first ogre of many.
Oh my goodness. "You are not ready." He looks ready to me — he's out there fighting. "I found the deer myself." It looks like he's doing great — what are you talking about, "we are going home"? He's doing great. I'd be proud if my son fought like that. "I haven't been sick in a long time. I can do this." "You are not ready."
This Stranger Just Beat Me Up
"What do you want?" "You already know the answer to that." "Whatever it is you seek, I do not have it. You should move on." "And here I thought your kind was supposed to be so enlightened. So much better than us. So much smarter. And yet you hide out here in the woods like a coward."
I gotta get my block out — or evade — because he is beating up my health. Oh, where's some health? He was laying it out. Oh, I can get my axe — oh, does that work on him? That's good, I was wondering where that was. Oh my goodness, dude, serious? Oh, I'm working on my shield — oh, I hit too many buttons at once. Oh, there's some health around here? I need some health. Ah — oh, that's hitting him harder. Where's some health at? Oh my goodness, I just beat the hell out of him, but I still need some help. Oh, he just knocked me down. Let's go. Dang, he just took me down. This stranger just beat me up hard. Let's go. Geez.
All right, let's try this again. Now I know — I got my axe out. Oh, I'll give it to you if you want it, if you want to come and get it. Oh, let me get my shield out. Can I throw this at him? Oh, there we go — got it with it coming back. I can't block that; I'm gonna dodge that. "Are you even trying?" Oh, dodge that. This is a whole new learning skill. Yeah, we need to dodge and roll some more — he's kicking my ass. All right, we're dodging and rolling some more. He just knocked me out again. Nice. All right, we're gonna dodge and block more. Let's go. Oh my god — oh, good dodge. He got me right in the face on that one, though.
This is cool. I've not played one of these kinds of games before — or in a long time, at least. Okay, can we hit him with that? It's so much fun to try new things in life. It's so much fun to just get out of your comfort zone. Man, oh, he went right through my block. "What did you do to me?" Just gotta watch this move. Let's just beat this guy to death. That sounds good. Oh — there we go, that's what I'm talking about. He's got to rebuild his house right now. Oh my god, I gotta fight this dude again. Oh my goodness. Yeah, I'm a Spartan Rage! This time, a Spartan Rage.
You Are Just as Bold as You Think I Am
No, I'm loving doing this, and I'm showing you that you have the courage inside to do whatever you really want to do in your life. I have a neighbor, and she says, "I wish I was bold and daring like you are." I'm like, you are. You absolutely are. She's like, "I don't really like my job. I just go in every day because I need the money. I wish I could be bold like you and just quit my job without knowing what job I'd have next." I'm like, you are bold like me. I'm just choosing — all of us have the potential to be a lot of different ways. You are just as bold and as daring as you think I am. You're just as inspiring as you might think I am. We need to finish him. Oh, he got me. Nice job.
I Don't Do Anything I Don't Love
I've had a lot of jobs, and I've done a lot of things to make money before. And I'm grateful today that I'm not willing to do anything I don't love to make money. I've come to see doing work without love as one of the most fundamental evils in the world. A lot of us don't think it's evil, but consider it this way: consider all the stuff you don't want to deal with. You probably would rather not deal with taxes or the IRS. Somebody goes to work every day to make that possible. If people refused to do jobs they didn't love, I think this would be an incredible world, and a lot of things would change. You'd be like, well, who would grow our food? Maybe we'd grow our own food. Maybe we would grow our own food at home, and only people who love gardening would be happy to grow some food for us.
I think one of the most basic things that causes problems in the world is that people go into work doing something without love. Like, "Well, I hate this job and this factory, but I'll just make this stuff because I want to feed my family." It's done as a means to an end. Now, I think there are some things where you could find a way to love what you do. You could find a way to love what you do in a factory — like, "I love knowing that I'm making toys kids are going to enjoy someday." I think it's essential we love all parts of our lives. I love that I'm changing my son's diapers and wiping my kids' butts and all the nastiest parts of parenting. I love that, because that's me helping my kids in the way they need help. I'm grateful that I have a chance to do that. I'm grateful that I can help my kids out. I don't do anything in my life that I don't love.
Oh my God — yes, I don't like that. Have you ever tried it? No? Then how do you know you don't like that? I'll even take it to the extreme. You might be like, "Well, I don't need to get murdered to know I don't like it." You actually could be surprised. If you're in a lot of pain and miserable and hate this life and somebody murders you, you might be like, thank God. Thank God — that life was a pain in the ass. I can really go be anywhere and do anything now. Thank you. You don't know until you've experienced something — even something as extreme as being murdered.
The Teacher I Had a Creepy Feeling About
I had a teacher in eighth grade, and I had a real creepy feeling about him. My brother thought he was awesome. But my mom and I, immediately at the open house meeting this teacher I had in the eighth or ninth grade — I'm like, there's something. I don't like this guy. He was outwardly a nice person, but I could feel there was something hidden. Something didn't feel right with this teacher. And I remember he was talking about kids going over to his house on the weekend. I was jealous, because there were cute girls in my class in eighth grade, and they were going over to hang out with this teacher on the weekend. And then my brother had this teacher in eighth grade, and my brother thought he was awesome. And then we get a call from the Office of Special Investigations from the Air Force, calling my parents: "Were your kids in this teacher's class? We need to talk to your kids about this teacher."
My Intuition Was Exactly On Point
They had arrested him — for abuse of children. And I'm like, I knew it. I knew something was whack with that teacher. I had never had that reaction to another teacher before. My intuition picked him out. As far as I know, I didn't ever come across any other teachers with issues, but that was the only teacher I had a reaction to, and it was exactly on point. I trust my intuition that most people are safe, and that I will be able to detect most people, if not everyone, who's not safe.
And I like the uncertainty of this game. My brain is kind of struggling right now. It's insane. It's looking, it's thinking, it's not sure exactly what to do. And that's where you're getting growth — that's where you're expanding and learning something new. That's why I love trying all these new games. I got inspired when I was praying for clarity, and my mother-in-law brought up Brené Brown's podcast, where she said there was a neuroscientist who found that if you do something totally new, that's when your brain really grows. You think, well, I just do the same little puzzle game — I play a crossword or chess every day, and that helps my brain grow. But it doesn't. It may help you stay active in what you've already done, but what helps your brain grow is to try something completely new, where your brain's not sure what the rules are, not sure what to do with itself. That's where you really get some good growth.
Another Ogre — How Exciting
All right. We did some puzzle games, and now it's time for some more combat, it looks like. How exciting. Another ogre. Do you need to hit him in the face, somebody said? I love my son's little arrows. What else? Oh, man, I'm stuck in a corner — we got to get out of that. Can I do a special on him? Oh, yeah, that's working good. Let's go. That's fantastic. Yeah, that worked good. I like that. We're gonna do more of that. Oh, he's got some friends now. Whoa, whoa. Ah, that was hot. Oh, I needed to hit him in a goal — didn't somebody say that? In that little goal spot on his leg? Oh, that burned. Here, distract him, son — Dad's about to die. He's fine, though.
Here, we need to find some health. Come on, is there any health around here? Oh, this is a good time to look for seals, isn't it? Let my son finish him off. See if I can hide behind this rock. Oh, there's some health. Let's go. Give me that. Oh, that was a tiny ass thing of health — better than nothing. Sounds like my son's really taking it over here. That's not good. These dudes are big. That boss reminds me of carrying all my BS anxieties around, but I have smaller hands. Wait, who is this little dude aiming at me? I don't know if you can shoot him through there, son. Oh, boy, he's got a good swing on him. It's so cool to just learn a completely new gameplay mechanic. Oh, yes. All right, I think we can finish him with this. We're gonna finish him off with a special. Ooh, brutal. Got him.
We had a lot of fun playing God of War. The key question is, will we play God of War again? That's the big question — and if you want to see which new games I keep coming back to, check out my Games playlist. Will we play God of War again?
