I started playing Immortality last night on PlayStation 5, and it is so much fun. It feels like watching parts of three movies at once and trying to piece them all together. It is relaxing and laid back, and I love it. I am looking forward to working my way through all of these films on the journey ahead.
I found Immortality because I had just finished Detroit Become Human and wanted another narrative-driven game, something I could sit back with, relax and enjoy, or get fully immersed in. I asked an AI for a recommendation, and it pointed me to Immortality.
Three Movies Cut Into Clips
Here is what makes the game special. It is essentially three movies in one, but all of them have been cut into a whole bunch of different clips. You start with a small handful. Then you select one person in a clip, and the game takes you into another clip that person appears in. Clip by clip, you piece together three different films that all share the same actress.
It reminds me of the sliced-up timeline of Pulp Fiction, only in far more detail. And you control the path. If you want to see more of one character, you can keep following that same character over and over. Or you can jump between the one actress in the three different movies. Underneath it all is a mystery to work out, which is really cool.
I was surprised that the game has some nudity and sexual content in it as well. Honestly, I am grateful for that, because it makes Immortality a great game not to live stream. I turned off the lights and got totally immersed in it for about an hour, and I am going to do the same thing tonight.
Why I Am Not Streaming This One
I have live streamed hundreds and hundreds of different games. Most of them were competitive: shooters like Call of Duty, and games like League of Legends. A lot of people play games like that, and most of those games are basically grinding.
To me, the real joy in gaming is entertainment. Having fun. Having a cinematic, movie-like experience. And those games often suck to stream. Imagine going to a movie and somebody kept talking the whole way through. You would want to tell them to shut up so you could really get into it.
For so many years I played games like Detroit Become Human on stream, and a game like Immortality, with its nudity and sexual content, is one I would not even have played on stream. I would have wanted to play it, and I would not have. So I simply did not play it.
Now I am grateful that gaming has turned into something very joyful for me. I have written before about why I keep coming back to gaming, and the games I choose now are different. I want the game itself to be fun, to feel like a movie, to really draw me in. I want to relax when I game. I do not want to be stressed out, getting adrenaline dumps and fighting. Some people say they play games to unwind; for me, if I am going to play a game, I want something that really immerses me. I do not want to grind another gun camo or grind another gun. And if I am going to hang out with my friends, I would rather play tennis or do something in person.
I do not watch TV, and I generally only watch movies in the theater. So it is a real treat to play a game like Immortality, to go through it and just be able to sit and be quiet and watch and listen and see what happens.
Games Worth Discovering, Including the Ones I Make
I am telling you about this because I want my Games channel to help you discover games that are really fun, and to help you let go of the games that are a grind and a waste of time.
