Punch-Out NES — A TED Talk With Games in the Background

Punch-Out NES — A TED Talk With Games in the Background

My friends, we're playing Punch-Out, originally on the Nintendo Entertainment System — 1987, technically. I'm playing this on a Nintendo Switch, because the Switch has Nintendo and Super Nintendo games included that you can play with an online membership. So I think you'll love and enjoy seeing me play Punch-Out here, and I'm so excited to spend this time with you. I'm so grateful for the time you spend with me, and I hope that every minute you spend here helps you feel better, love your life, deepen your connection with something bigger than you, and discover your greatest self — all that good stuff.

The Mike Tyson Version and My Game Collection

I would like your feedback: do you think it's worth dropping $50 to get the version of this game that has Mike Tyson? Because apparently Nintendo paid Mike Tyson fifty grand for a three-year license, but then the license ran out, so they couldn't make a version with Tyson anymore. For that experience, I'll pay $250 for it.

I've got a beautiful game collection. Just a few of my favorites sit up on the shelf — the ones I have the original boxes for — and then I've got a whole load of PlayStation and Xbox games, PlayStation 2 and Xbox One games, back there too. That's just a little tiny bit of the collection.

Oh — let's not hit me! No, don't take a picture of him, hit me! All right, let me get back in. You hit me while I'm talking? Whoa. You knock him out — if you can't beat Glass Joe in the first round, that's the L in my book. Oh, you knock him out! Oh, he got me with that left, quick. I was good, I was gonna die — oh, I'm done. Oh, I went — all right, that's too quick, I know it's too quick. Oh my God, I'm gonna dodge one of these. There we go — punish him! Oh yeah, that's it. Oh, he countered my uppercut. Good job — get him in the face. There we go, he's down.

If you want to be better at your job, do something you really love, and put the time and effort in to be the best version of yourself. Oh, he knocked me down! I'm grateful that when I do the work to really love myself, get help from other people, and show up here being inspired, it helps me. Man, this dude knocked me on my booty crack again. Dude, he just knocked me on my booty — I'm out, I'm done right now. This is the first dude in the game — or the second boss. All right, we're gonna knock him out. Oh yeah, get him! Oh, he's going down now — I'm yelling timber! Yeah, this is not the version with Tyson. I'm dodging — oh, he did me with a double. Ah, come on, give me some more hearts. I'm so tired, I wore myself out. I didn't have any hearts, I couldn't hardly punch. Yeah, this is just regular Punch-Out, dude. I'm sitting here talking and getting knocked the [__] out.

Wayne Dyer, Acts of Kindness, and My Friend Ralph

I was listening to Wayne Dyer today, and one thing I do that really helps me feel better is I'm always listening to something inspirational. Wayne Dyer was saying that according to the data he saw, seeing an act of kindness gives your brain as much serotonin as antidepressants do. Just witnessing an act of kindness gives your brain that much serotonin — it helps you feel good. If you're depressed, get out there and help somebody else. Get out there and be kind to somebody else. If you see a homeless person on the street asking for money, the way I look at it, that's an opportunity for me to help.

My friend Ralph lives on the street. I gave my friend 20 bucks today, and I've given him thousands and thousands of dollars over the years. I bring a twenty — even though I don't take my wallet to my AA meeting, I bring a twenty every time, just in case Ralph is there. Just for Ralph. Because look, it helps me feel good, and it helps him feel good. That twenty means a lot to him — it means much more to him than it does to me — and it leaves me feeling good. And to me, feeling good is feeling God.

Letting Go of Irritability

If you want to stop being irritable, just set the intention that you don't want to be irritable anymore, and that you'll do whatever it takes to stop being irritable — to let go of being irritable. It comes down to knowing what you want and why you want it. Why do I hate being irritable? Because my kids deserve a father that's not irritable and ready to yell at them over something stupid. My wife deserves a husband who's not on edge and ready to get all upset over something stupid. That's why I love not being irritable.

And it's amazing, because sometimes you're irritable because you've lost your perspective on life. You can't see — you're stuck in this little tiny perspective. But when you zoom out, and sometimes with the negative, awful pictures and things that our mind gives us — if you can convert those, that's alchemy. If you can take that awful, horrible picture in your mind and convert it into love and gratitude, that's what I'm talking about. That's what I've done. I'm like, I don't care how many negative thoughts or awful thoughts come through this mind — I'm gonna convert them to love and joy and gratitude.

He's dancing all over the place — oh, he's going in! Oh, what a combo! Piston Honda is laying it down — Piston Honda laying it down. Hey, I wear this because it gets attention, and let's just be honest: I'm streaming live, I'm hoping to get attention — I want these dudes to notice me. Now Piston Honda's gonna take it. You take it, Piston Honda — I'm going in on him. He's going down, I'm yelling timber! He's going down — oh, I saw that. Oh, we dodged that one, though. Oh yeah, get him, finish him! Ah — oh, dodge that shot, nice. Oh, dodged that one too. Dang, he's blocking everything. Oh, there — now he's going down. Oh wow. To finish him, hit him in the stomach when he charges. All right, good tip. Oh my goodness, this dude — oh my goodness, he whooped me.

Understanding My Mother — and Finding Her a Dog

But if you are having a conflict with somebody, and you can just set a goal that you want to understand them, it makes a world of difference. Oh, we got it now — yeah, is he going down now? Yeah, he's going down now. So I set an intention to understand — yeah, I've got this mother that I want to exist with peacefully. I wanted to understand her way of thinking so clearly that it's as if it's my thinking. I talked to my mother, and I listened to my mother, and I came to understand her. My understanding came out to basically this: my mom wants another dog, and she needs help getting the dog. She's struggling to do it herself, and the best she can do right now is find this expensive dog online. So I said, "Mom, would you be open to letting me help you find a dog?" She said, "Absolutely, I would love that." Now I'm helping my mother find a dog, and if everything goes well, my mother is going to have a dog this month — and if everything goes well, I'm gonna go pick that dog up on Sunday.

What's going on here is I'm helping change lives while playing video games. It's inspirational — this is like a TED talk while there's some games on in the background. You think you're coming in for a game, but what you're really coming in for is good vibes. You're coming in to learn something new and to feel good — and dang, he smoked me — you're coming in here to make a better world together. That's what's going on in here: we're making a better world together.

Because if you're not happy with the world, the call to action is let's work together and make a better world. If you're not happy with the gas prices, the economy, your relationship — if you're not happy, the solution is: let's make a better world together. Let's not complain about the world; let's see what we can do to make a better world.

If you look at social media and the news, you might think, man, this world's a whole horrible place. But see, that's like zooming in. The world is a big place. Yes, there are awful, suffering, miserable things happening, but most of what's happening on this planet is kind, loving, caring, considerate — it's just not newsworthy. Most of what's going on on this planet is love: caring people trying their best, showing up to work, trying to raise their families. For more days like this one, you'll find plenty more on my Life playlist.

I've had a wonderful time with you, and I'll see you tomorrow.
