ICP explained for beginners

Most of the internet you use runs on computers owned by a handful of companies. When you open an app or a website, a server in an Amazon, Google, or Microsoft data center sends it to you. The company that rents that server can change the rules, raise the price, get hacked, or shut the whole thing off, and you have no say in it.

The Internet Computer is a blockchain built to replace that server. Instead of one company's machine, your website or app runs on a network of independent node machines spread across data centers around the world, and the network itself serves the pages to your browser. Nothing sits in the middle. Here is how the pieces fit together in plain language:

Canisters

A canister is a smart contract that holds both the code and the data of an app. My blog posts, my store, my chat, and my games each live in canisters. A canister can serve a web page straight to your browser, which is why this site needs no traditional web host.

Reverse gas

On most blockchains, you pay a fee for every click. On ICP, the developer pays for the computing power in advance with something called cycles, so visitors use the app for free. You did not need a wallet or a token to open this page.

The NNS

The Network Nervous System is the on-chain government of ICP. Anyone who stakes ICP in a neuron can vote on proposals that upgrade the network, add nodes, and set the rules. Stakers earn rewards, called maturity, for voting.

Internet Identity

Instead of a password or a seed phrase, you sign in with the fingerprint, face, or security key already on your device. When hackers got into my Google account and my MetaMask wallet, my ICP stayed safe behind Internet Identity.

Chain fusion

ICP can talk directly to Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other chains without a bridge, so a canister can hold and send real Bitcoin or Ethereum on its own.

The ICP token

The token does three jobs: it is staked in the NNS to govern the network, it is converted into cycles to pay for computation and storage, and it is money you can send to anyone, which is how many of my customers pay me.

This whole website is made with ICP

I am not describing ICP from the outside. JerryBanfield.com is an asset canister on the Internet Computer, and the store, the cart, the chat, the direct messages, the leaderboard, the games, and the public business dashboard are all canisters I built with AI, with no company in between me and you. When you buy something here, you can pay with a card or with ICP, and a large share of my sales have come in as ICP.
